Irish parents fundraise to bring toddler’s body home after tragic death in Sydney
Maisie passed away on July 8 from a rare neurometabolic disorder called Leigh Syndrome
Maisie, who lived in Sydney with her parents Conor Kehoe, originally from Co Limerick and Danielle O’Sullivan, originally from Co Meath, passed away on July 8 from a rare neurometabolic disorder called Leigh Syndrome.
The tot had an unexpected seizure on the morning of Friday, July 5, while Danielle was getting ready for work and was quickly rushed to hospital in an ambulance.
The 17-month-old’s condition worsened and after fighting bravely all weekend, she lost her battle on Monday evening.
Doctors initially suspected that Maisie had been struck with meningitis but have since confirmed that she had Leigh Syndrome.
Friends of the family later set up a GoFundMe page “to help ease some of the financial pressure on them during this incredibly difficult time”.
“We all know the costs associated with such situations can be overwhelming. Even raising enough funds to cover their rent during this period would make a massive difference,” fundraiser organiser Sean O’Mahony wrote.
He said that losing Maisie has been “absolutely devastating” for Conor and Danielle, adding that they “face a long road to recovery”.
“Conor and Danielle also want to express their heartfelt thanks to the amazing doctors and nurses at Sydney Children’s Hospital in Randwick and the Kevin Bell trust fund, who couldn’t have been more helpful.”
So far, the fundraiser has received $248,478 Australian Dollars (€154,000) in donations from more than 1,400 patrons.
In an update, Danielle and Conor announced their little girl’s funeral arrangements, sharing that a mass will be held for Maisie in St Andrew’s Catholic Parish, Malabar, Sydney on Tuesday, 16 July at 7pm before she “makes her final journey to Ireland”.
“On behalf of Danielle and Conor they would like to express their heartfelt thanks and appreciation on the overwhelming support that they have received during this terrible time. They also wish to invite you to celebrate the short and happy life of their precious baby girl Maisie,” they added.
