Irishman dies while on holiday in Spain

The Department of Foreign Affairs has said it is providing consular assistance to the family of an Irishman who died while on holiday in Spain.

Michael Grant, 45, from Waterford city was in Majorca with family members and friends when he took ill suddenly early this morning.

He was from a well-known family and worked as a physiotherapist as well as being involved with a number of local sports clubs, including St Joseph’s AFC and Mount Sion GAA.

He was the founder of the juvenile academy at St Joseph’s.

It’s understood a post-mortem examination is taking place in Majorca on Mr Grant’s body. The death is being investigated by the local Civil Guard but is not believed to have been suspicious in any way.

Originally from Morrisson’s Road in Waterford, Mr Grant lived in the Hillview area with his family and is survived by his wife Leanne and children Kayley, Niamh, Shay, and Sofia, as well as his parents and other relatives and friends.

In a statement, St Joseph’s AFC described Michael Grant as “a beloved friend” and his death as a “devastating loss”.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said it is aware of the case and is providing consular assistance.
