Experts have finally revealed the answer to the age-old question: what does a cheater look like?
Hundreds of relationship therapists have in the past delved into why people cheat, but few have considered what a typical cheater does for a living.
Professionals at Ashley Madison, a dating website for married people, say that cheaters tend to have average jobs making less than $75,000 a year.
A survey of more than 2,600 website members revealed that men most likely to cheat are tradies, tech workers, engineers, sales managers, and construction workers for men.
On the other hand, women who cheat are often in care-giving roles like nurses, teachers, marketing executives, stay at home mums, and hospitality workers.
A person’s birth order, zodiac sign, job, and the number of children they have all influence whether or not they’re susceptible to infidelity, the analysis also found.
The average Ashley Madison member has 1 or 2 children, is the eldest among their siblings, and has a lacklustre (but not particularly dramatic) relationship with their primary partner.
Most men and women who cheat are married with children, and more than a third of Ashley Madison members are parents to children aged 18-25.
Experts say these people are ’empty nesters looking to fill their lives elsewhere’ after their children move out of home.
A relationship therapist has also revealed what cheaters are looking for outside of their relationships – and it’s not just sex.
Experts discovered that people on Ashley Madison are looking for more than just a hook up – they prefer something long-term to come out of using the dating website.
‘When people are looking to cheat, they pick one of two kinds of partners; either someone exactly like them, or someone whose personality seems totally opposite to their own,’ Dr. Tammy Nelson, sex and relationship therapist told FEMAIL.
‘Finding someone with a different temperament and background can be intriguing and exciting. Meanwhile, someone with similar traits can feel familiar, which can make it more comfortable if someone is nervous or unsure about starting an affair.’
