TRAVEL experts have revealed their top tips on how to best reset after a long journey.
Nicole Cueto, advisor and travel expert, has travelled to more than 40 countries in the last 20 years.
Throughout her years of experience, Nicole picked up habits that make transitioning back to normal life after travelling a lot easier.
She recommends travellers fly overnight, stay hydrated during the trip and get “at least 12 hours to reset” before returning to work.
As long as passengers follow that “trifecta” returning to work will be a lot easier, according to Nicole.
Long-haul trips can be physically and mentally exhausting.
This makes it tempting to snuggle straight into bed after a long flight.
However, this can be costly as your body clock will fail to adjust, leaving you lying awake all night and feeling tired the next day, according to Laura Lindsey, a global travel trends expert.
Instead, stay awake throughout the day to sync your circadian rhythm back to normal.
Laura added: “If you really have to snooze, keep it short—a two-hour nap is enough of a boost without destroying your chances of a good night’s sleep.”
The expert explained that going for a stroll in the sun is another good way to fight jet lag.
“Our bodies are designed to respond to daylight—we want to be awake when the sun’s out and asleep when it’s dark,” she said.
It is important to get out in the sun regardless of how tired you feel, the expert added.
Once it gets to bedtime and you find yourself struggling to fall asleep, despite being on the “verge of dropping off all day,” try to make your sleeping area as comfortable as possible.
Laura said: “Give yourself a 30- to 60-minute wind-down period with no electronics, turn on the fan for a bit of white noise, and draw the curtains so it’s pitch dark.”
Another way travellers can save themselves hassle after returning from holiday is to stock up on easy-to-prepare food before jetting off, according to travel experts.
Most holiday-goers are too tired to do a weekly shop straight after a long-haul flight.
By stocking up on food that is easy to cook beforehand, travellers can guarantee themselves a tasty meal once they’re back.
