Jail after kicking Cork city shop ice cream display

A 41-year-old man who ran at an ice cream display at the front door of Centra on Grand Parade and kicked it over causing extensive damage has been jailed for seven months.

Judge Mary Dorgan said that Daniel Walsh, of 122 Lower Friars Walk, Togher, Cork, had the case against him adjourned a number of times with him on bail on strict conditions requiring him not to cause any more problems.

However, the judge said that she now had to sentence the accused because he had been unable to stay out of trouble. He has certain mental health challenges that have been discussed in court during various adjournments of the case previously.

The incident at Centra occurred at around 4pm on August 29, 2023.

Sergeant Dave Delea said the accused kicked the display, damaging the base to such an extent that it could not be used and had to be replaced at a cost of €480.

This was Daniel Walsh’s 13th conviction for causing criminal damage. He has six previous convictions for assault, 24 for engaging in threatening or abusive behaviour, and 30 for being drunk and a source of danger to himself or others.

He has a total of 96 previous convictions.

Defence solicitor Frank Buttimer said the defendant had pleaded guilty to the latest offence.

On previous occasions it was stated that the accused had certain mental health difficulties as a result of injuries sustained in an accident many years ago and that the consumption of alcohol exacerbated his difficulties.
