Joel Matip has taken his first steps into coaching alongside two of his old Liverpool teammates.

The 32-year-old was one of the first signings of the Jurgen Klopp era at Anfield and lifted almost every major competition during a trophy-laden eight-year stint on Merseyside.

Klopp hailed Matip upon confirmation of his departure after the expiration of his contract last month, describing the former Schalke defender as “a wonderful professional, a wonderful footballer and a wonderful human being.”

Matip continued as a key presence in the Liverpool backline in what turned to be Klopp’s final campaign too, making nine Premier League starts before a serious knee injury ended his season early.

It is unclear as to whether or not the ex-Cameroon international will sign for another club at this stage but he has taken his first steps into life after Liverpool.

Matip, along with former teammates Adrian and Diogo Jota, completed his UEFA B Licence as they look to potentially move into coaching.

The B Licence is the level below the UEFA A Licence, and allows holders to become head coaches at amateur clubs, youth teams up to the age of 16 and assistant coaches at professional clubs.

Matip is just one of the players following Klopp out the exit door, with Thiago Alcantara joining him.

The Reds, who have officially confirmed the appointment of Arne Slot as Klopp’s replacement, have offered a contract extension to goalkeeper Adrian.

While Liverpool look well-stocked in goal, Alisson Becker’s usual understudy in Caoimhin Kelleher recently hinted at a move away in pursuit of first-team football.

“I’m proud of this season, I’ve really proved myself,” said the Ireland international.

“I’ve loved being at Liverpool and hopefully there’s more to come there. But I feel like I’ve done my years as a No.2. The ambition now is to be a No.1. I am ready and capable.”
