Joey Carbery completes move to French side Bordeaux
The worst kept secret in Irish rugby has been confirmed, as Bordeaux have officially announced the signing of Joey Carbery.
The out-half has ended his six-year spell with Munster, as he moves to France in search of a fresh start following a frustrating couple of seasons.
Carbery (28) joined Munster from Leinster in 2018, and while he has played 37 games for Ireland, his international career has now been put on hold, as he links up with Bordeaux, who were beaten heavily by Toulouse in last weekend’s Top 14 final.
Bordeaux are littered with French stars and play an exciting brand of rugby under attack coach Noel McNamara, who knows Carbery well from his time in Ireland.
Although Carbery has endured plenty of injury problems in the last few years, and he missed the tail end of Munster’s campaign, he remains a huge talent, who will hope to thrive in what is an exciting new chapter of his career.
Carbery, who can also play at full-back, will likely compete with Matthieu Jalibert for game-time at ‘10’, with the back-up French out-half reportedly offered a bumper new deal to remain at Bordeaux amid interest from other clubs.
