John Egan weighing up Sheffield United future amid Premier League offers
The Corkman is now back fit having been sidelined with a foot injury since September, but will soon become a free agent with his contract at Bramall Lane expiring this month.
With the Blades preparing for Championship football next season after relegation from the Premier League, two top-flight clubs are interested in signing the 31-year-old centre-half for the upcoming campaign.
With Sheffield in discussions over a new deal to keep Egan at the club, he insists his only focus at the moment is keeping sharp ahead of pre-season but did admit that he’d like to have his future sorted soon.
“Where I stand is making sure I’m fully fit for pre-season. Those talks are going on in the background, they are above my head,” said Egan, speaking on behalf of Pringles.
“For the last few months now, I’ve just been gearing myself towards getting fully fit for pre-season. I’m in a great place now. That’s been at the forefront of my mind, getting back fully fit.”
Asked about a potential Premier League move this summer, Egan replied: “Most of these things are out of my hands. As a player, all I can do is focus on getting my body up to speed.
“The talks will be going on in the background and when the time comes, when there is an offer or a decision to be made, everything gets weighed up. My main goal now is to keep going with my training and keep working really hard. When the time comes where a decision has to be made, a decision will be made.
“Ideally I would like to have something sorted soon, but as I have said before, these talks are going on in the background and as a player all I can do now is make sure I recover from this injury 100pc and keep striving really hard to put myself in the best shape possible for pre-season.”
Egan, capped 36 times for Ireland since his debut in 2017, has not featured at international level since September’s defeat to the Dutch, having missed the last four camps with injury.
He’ll be in line to return for the Boys in Green in September, as the Nations League campaign gets underway with a home double-header against England and Greece.
