Junior Disc Golf Championship coming to Sylvan Lake

Coming up on Saturday, June 22nd there will be the 2024 Alberta Junior Disc Golf Championship.

This Professional Disc Golf Association (PGDA) sanctioned event will happen at the Sylvan Lake Disc Golf Course.

One of the coordinators of the event, Eric Matthew Anderson, says it’s going to be a great tournament.

“Some of the best disc golfing youth in Alberta will be there. Most of the kids are registered with the PDGA and get rated. Gavin Beamish, will be there and he won last year.”

So far there are 14 players registered, but Anderson says they will expect more as in past events, they have had 20-30 athletes playing.

Because of a relatively low cost, no tee-times (on most courses), and many courses popping up around Alberta, disc golf is one of the fastest growing sports in the world. Anderson says there is a good and bad to that for younger players in tournaments.

“One of the problems is actually a success. Many kids get good quickly and play in mixed age tournaments. Mixed age tournaments mostly have adults. My son played in his first mixed age tournament a few years back.”

On June 22nd, at the tournament, division winners, the overall winner, the most improved play, and the 2023 Alberta Junior Points Champion will be acknowledged.
