Kneecap scoops three awards at Galway Film Fleadh

The Irish-language film Kneecap, “the origin story of the riotous and ground-breaking” Belfast rap trio of the same name, has scooped three top awards at the Galway Film Fleadh.

The highly-anticipated movie, which tells the story of the band – Kneecap – and their efforts to break into the music industry, was named the winner of the Best Irish Film and Best Irish Language Film categories, and it also received the coveted Audience Award.

Speaking about their impressive wins, writer and director Rich Peppiatt said the outpouring of support shown to the movie “is something we’ll never forget”.

“For a film as dyed in the tricolour as Kneecap, the Irish premiere was always going to be special and the audiences in Galway have blown us away,” he said.

“To be honoured in the way we have at this beautiful festival is something we’ll never forget. Go raibh míle maith agat the Fleadh.”

Producer Trevor Birney said it’s “been an amazing week in Galway” and admits he can’t wait for people to “finally see this special film” which is set for release next month.

“This is a huge endorsement, not only of Rich and Kneecap but also of our cast and crew as well as the financiers who supported us all the way,” he said.

“It’s been an amazing week in Galway, and we thank Miriam and the team for backing the film. Roll on the release so everyone can finally see this special film!”

The honours at Galway are the latest in a slew of gongs from some of the world’s top film festivals, including the NEXT Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival in January.

Kneecap opens in Irish cinemas on 8 August.
