Latest: Cork road reopens after cooking oil spillage
A SECTION of the N72 has been reopened after a spillage of cooking oil caused the road’s closure for much of Tuesday.
The incident, which involved the spillage of cooking oil from a private truck, occurred at a filling station in Mallow shortly before 9am, and led to the closure of a section of the road between the Clock House and the Roadstone Quarry.
Gardaí, members of the fire service and workers from the Cork County Council roads department attended the scene to assist in what turned out to be a lengthy clean-up.
On Tuesday afternoon, a spokesperson for Cork County Council said it was envisaged that the road would be reopened in sections , after it had been made safe by the fire service.
“Most of the spillage occurred in the Spa area of Mallow town between the Clock House and Oliver’s Cross.
“The clean-up is proving difficult because cooking oil is harder to break up and more slippery compared to vehicle oil,” the spokesperson said.
The road remained closed, with diversions in place, until early on Tuesday evening, when, according to the garda press office, it was reopened.
