Latest on travel overhaul between Waterbeach and Cambridge

A consultation into proposals to overhaul travel between Waterbeach and Cambridge has been extended by another week. The plans, from Greater Cambridge Partnership (GCP), include a new busway, a path for pedestrians and cyclists and a travel hub near the A10.

The busway would connect the new town of Waterbeach and north Cambridge via Landbeach and the Milton Park and Ride. It would be a single carriageway road for buses only, with an access track alongside for maintenance and emergency services.

The travel hub is planned for west of the A10 near Denny End Road in Waterbeach, with a visitor building, waiting areas and more than 1,000 parking spaces. It is hoped that it will give drivers an easier way to commute into Cambridge and reduce strain on the roads.

In September 2023, the Greater Cambridge Partnership’s executive board chose to move forward with the busway route option shown above, which includes Landbeach, and site option C for the travel hub to the west of the new town of Waterbeach. Two public consultations between 2020 and 2023 helped to inform these decisions.

Locals are being asked for views on how to manage and reduce the scheme’s impacts on the environment, which will help decide the proposals and if any alternatives should be considered. The deadline was initially set for Monday (July 15), but this has now been extended to July 22.

A statement on the website said: “In the new town of Waterbeach, bus services would link to Cambridge Research Park and the relocated Waterbeach railway station. In Cambridge, bus services would link via the existing St Ives to Cambridge busway to Cambridge Regional College, Cambridge Science Park and the city centre.
