Leeds United accept Diego Llorente bid with transfer imminent
Diego Llorente is heading for the Leeds United exit
Diego Llorente’s move to Real Betis looks imminent after Leeds United accepted an improved transfer bid, according to Graham Smyth.
The Yorkshire Evening Post reporter posted on X (8 July) to say that the club has accepted an offer from the Spanish club overnight and the transfer could be completed on Monday.
Llorente reportedly didn’t see himself returning to the fold at Elland Road this season after 18 months on loan at Roma and United were just as happy to get his sizeable wages off the club’s financial books.
Betis had previously submitted a roughly £5.1million bid for the 30-year-old centre-back which the club knocked back, although the exact figure of their latest, accepted offer is currently undisclosed [Mucho Deporte, 5 July].
Leeds United happy to accept Diego Llorente transfer
Llorente has had one foot out of the Elland Road door for several months now, arguably going all the way back to his January 2023 loan move to Serie A side Roma [Diegolarom, 6 July].
Had the Whites stayed in the Premier League at the end of that campaign, the Spaniard may well have returned to the fold, but their relegation resulted in an exodus of loan players with Llorente following suit.
Joined in Rome by Rasmus Kristensen last season, Llorente’s regular performances didn’t do enough to entice the Italian side into making the move permanent, with both defenders slated to return to LS11 [Corriere dello Sport, 28 May].
However, Betis’ latest approach for a want-away Whites player, having already signed their own loanee Marc Roca permanently, looks like granting Llorente the departure wish he wanted this summer [Gonzalo Tortosa, 8 July].
The £18million fee paid four years ago unfortunately won’t be recouped by Daniel Farke’s side, but the acceptance of Betis’ offer suggests Leeds were more than happy to cut their losses on Llorente.
