Len Rome’s Local Health: Cancer fatigue
(WYTV) — Cancer can tire you out. Cancer patients can feel fatigued before, during and after treatments. And this tiredness can take an emotional toll on a patient, too.
Ask anyone coping with cancer fatigue, and he or she will tell you that it’s horrendous. It can feel like your body is working overtime, and you’re super exhausted. It’s the type of tiredness that won’t go away despite resting a bit.
“It’s different from the normal tiredness we typically have, as it’s more intense,” said Dr. Touré Barksdale. “It’s not easily relieved with rest, and it can greatly impact how you’re feeling and doing.”
Several things bring on cancer fatigue, including chemotherapy, radiation, anemia, emotional factors and the cancer itself. The treatments can include physical therapy, energy conservation, psycho stimulants and even holistic methods.
Do only the important things. Ask for help when needed and keep in touch with your doctor.
Remember, this is different from typical tiredness. At times, your arms and legs might feel heavy, making it hard to move. It may be challenging just to get out of bed in the morning.
