Limerick’s Munster Hurling Championship six in-a-row in numbers
ON Sunday, June 9 the John Kiely managed senior hurlers wrote another glorious capture in the history of Limerick GAA.
The provincial senior hurling championship commenced in 1888 and now after almost 140 competitions, Limerick stand alone as the only side to have won six titles in-a-row.

Nickie Quaid has played every single minute of John Kiely’s tenure as Limerick manager and he has been a key factor in the Treaty teams Championship run since 2019.

There have only been five different venues that Limerick have competed in during the Munster and All-Ireland Championship since 2019 which are TUS Gaelic Grounds, Walsh Park, FBD Semple Stadium, Cusack Park and SuperValue Pairc Ui Chaoimh.

Declan Hannon, Graeme Mulcahy and David Reidy and Nickie Quaid are now all holders of seven Munster Senior Hurling Championship medals – adding the six in-a-row to their 2013 title success. Tipperary’s John Doyle (1949 to 1967) and Cork’s Jimmy Barry-Murphy (1975 to 1986) both have 10 winners medals.

Limerick had an average winning margin of eight points across the 25 matches. In total Limerick scored 36-614 and conceded 24-516. That’s an average score of 1.4goals and 24.5points per game and a concession of 0.9goals and 20.6 points per game. The highest scores came this season – scoring 9-124. Limerick did also concede the most goals of any campaign this year – seven.

Limerick via Nickie Quaid and his defensive colleagues, kept nine clean sheets across the 25 matches – three times against each of; Waterford, Clare and Tipperary. In total Limerick conceded 24 goal.

The number of Munster Championship games Sean Finn started from 2019 until his ACL injury which he picked up against Clare in their second round Munster championship defeat in the Gaelic Grounds in 2023.

The amount of games Kyle Hayes has started for Limerick only missing out on the 2022 Round Robin Munster Championship win at home to Waterford and the 2023 Munster Final win against Clare in the TUS Gaelic Grounds.

The number of games played across the last six Munster Senior Hurling Championships by Limerick. And, all started with a 2019 defeat – to Cork in the TUS Gaelic Grounds as John Kiely’s men began their All-Ireland SHC title defence with a seven point loss.

In total 29 players saw the field of play in a Munster Senior Hurling Final. Seven players started all six finals – Nickie Quaid, Diarmaid Byrnes, Declan Hannon, William O’Donoghue, Gearoid Hegarty and Tom Morrissey. Quaid and Byrnes played every minute of the six finals.

Limerick scored 36 goals across the 25 matches. There were six games in which Limerick didn’t raise a green flag. Aaron Gillane leads the way with 10 goals, followed by Seamus Flanagan with nine. In total 11 players scored goals with Kyle Hayes third on the list with five.

This year’s All-Ireland semi-final against rivals Cork will be John Kiely’s 45th game in charge of the Limerick senior hurlers.

A total of 61 players have won Munster Senior Hurling Championship medals with Limerick from 2019 to 2024. Twenty one players have featured in each of the six-in-a-row winning panels.

The amount of points Limerick have scored after the six seasons in the province. This year’s 15-points against Clare (albeit there was also three goals) was the lowest points tally. The highest tally was 0-36 against Clare in 2020.
