Listen to Galway commentator’s manic call – complete with Taylor Swift soundbite

A DEPLETED Galway somehow won the day at Croke Park – and commentator Ollie Turner has won widespread kudos for nailing the seismic moment.

Upon the final whistle of a determined second-half comeback, Turner unfurled a poetic piece of prose.

The Connacht champions dug out a 0-17 to 0-16 win late on
Damien Comer and Shane Walsh were both clearly operating at less than 100% but gutted it out

Even reading the text of what he belted out makes it apparent why it instantly struck a chord with listeners of Galway Bay FM.

But it’s only when listening to it that you fully get a sense of the enormity of the moment for everyone connected with The Tribesmen.

He declares: “Galway have won! It’s the greatest day Galway football has seen in over two decades.

“And every man, woman and child stands to applaud Pádraic Joyce and his gallant Galway men.

“Sweet Mother of Jesus they have pulled off the unthinkable!

“Forget about Taylor Swift. Shake it Off at the Aviva and come over here to Croke Park because you are witnessing the West awake.

“Gaillimh Abú!”

The audio has spread like wildfire across social media as it is a stirring example of brilliant commentary.

The deafening noise at full-time signalled a real case of Padraic Joyce and his team silencing their doubters.

And the three-time former All-Star didn’t forget it afterwards.

A defiant Joyce said: “Dublin had only lost two games in Croke Park in 10 years – that’s only the third one now.

“For us, and for everybody writing us off, not giving us a chance, not giving us the respect we deserve as a team that’s undefeated all Championship long, it was a fantastic win.

“We made every decision on the pitch correct, the team that started and the team that finished.

“We were forced into some changes but to a man I thought we were absolutely outstanding.

“There were emotional scenes at the end and you can say we might have over celebrated a bit.

“But on a day when you beat one of the best teams that has played football for 10, 15 years, you should be very, very happy.”

It was even more impressive as hamstring injuries forced the substitutions of both captain Sean Kelly and star attacker Shane Walsh.

Joyce refused to rule the pair in or out for their July 13/14 All-Ireland semi-final, but said Walsh’s injury ‘doesn’t look good’.
