LIV Golf star on verge of axe had to own up after Dustin Johnson statement

He did not make himself very popular with his comments last year, and now one LIV Golf player could well be axed from the Saudi Arabian-backed rebel tour

Relegation-threatened LIV Golf star Pat Perez is certainly not seeing eye-to-eye with Tiger Woods right now – and it wasn’t too long ago that he was caught in an awkward situation with Dustin Johnson too.

Two years after he hit out at PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan – something which Johnson was initially accused of doing before Perez came forward – the 48-year-old has now sent an explosive message to Woods, who’s been criticising LIV.

Despite hitting out at Woods, Perez’s future with the Saudi Arabian backed rebel tour is looking rather grim as things stand. He put pen to paper on a $10m (£7.9m) contract to join the rebel series in 2022, despite the criticism of big figures in the sport like Woods, and Perez enjoyed some success to begin with in the series. He lined his pockets handsomely in early competitions, while also clinching the inaugural LIV team championship in 2022 as part of the 4Aces team, which featured the likes of Johnson as captain, Patrick Reed and Harold Varner III.

However, Perez made himself rather unpopular when he made scathing comments about Monahan and framed it in a way that sounded like the view was that of the whole team, rather than just him personally.

After the LIV event in Adelaide last year, it was alleged that Johnson had said: “We [LIV Golf ] don’t give a damn how he [Monahan] feels. We know how he feels about us, so it’s mutual.”

Johnson then had to issue a statement claiming he did not say those comments and that he still holds a huge amount of respect for Monahan. Soon after, Perez had to own up and make it clear that he and he alone made those comments.

While speaking to Sports Illustrated, Perez admitted: “DJ said nothing, it was all me. I said we don’t care what Jay thinks cause we know how he feels about us and when I say WE, I mean me. I can’t speak for the whole group.”

As well as making headlines for the wrong reasons with his comments, Perez’s campaign has been a real struggle both personally and for his 4Aces team. They are currently languishing in ninth position in the overall rankings.
