LIVE Cork election count updates as race on for city council seats
The smallest coalition partner had been worried about this election as traditionally, the Greens get a bit of a kicking after a long spell in Government.
However, while Green Party leader Eamon Ryan said that while it was “too early to tell” what was happening with the vote nationwide, he is happy that candidates in Dublin’s south inner city were performing well.
The party leader is at the count centre in Dublin and after the first tally, Michael Pidgeon was topping the poll for the South West Inner City on 19%.
The party is also performing well in the South East Inner City on 14.7%.
Speaking in the RDS, Minister Ryan said: “If the tallies are accurate, they may top the poll. That is an incredible achievement. That says something about Dublin. It is a really strong Green message in Dublin, it seems.”
He also predicted that Mr Ryan suggested that the Green Party may take a seat in Dingle, Co Kerry, with Peadar Ó Fionnáin.
“If we win a seat in Dible, I will be celebrating as much as Dublin Bay South, if not more.”
It was expected that the Green Party vote would not be as strong as it was in the 2019 elections following the “Green wave”. However, it appears that while the party may lose a couple of seats, it will hold strong.
