LMETB Chair welcomes plans for €12.5m Basketball Arena
The project is earmarked for a site on the grounds of St. Oliver’s Community College in Drogheda
Plans are being welcomed to deliver a state of the art €12.5 million basketball arena on the grounds of St Oliver’s Community College in Drogheda.
Planning is now lodged with Louth County Council who will become the lead sponsor of the venture, while seed funding of €3.7 million has also been sourced.
Meath Fianna Fáil Councillor Wayne Harding, who is also Chair of the Louth Meath Education and Training Board (LMETB) and St. Oliver’s says the project has got really significant potential:
“It’s on a very big scale and it will be brilliant for the town of Drogheda
and indeed the surrounding areas. St. Oliver’s School is the biggest secondary school
in the country with 1,600 pupils at the moment but there’s a huge amount on Marley’s Lane.
I believe it could be the catalyst for something really significant.
Aura swimming pool is across the road and there are indoor AstroTurf pitches there,
you have St. Nicholas’s, you have the other schools on Marley’s Lane, and indeed Drogheda Boys, and I really think that it’s an area of Drogheda that could be tapped into a very, very fine facility going forward.”
