Local elections 2024 – Dublin City Council: Lord Mayor Daithí de Róiste loses seat as all 63 councillors elected

Lord Mayor of Dublin Daithí de Róiste lost his seat on Dublin City Council, losing out to former Olympic boxer Philip Sutcliffe on the tenth count.

His loss will be a tough one to bear for Fianna Fáil, while Sinn Féin has made a recovery since initial tallies warned of a party in trouble.

They have since climbed to elect 9 councillors in Dublin but have not made the gains the party would have dreamed of.

There are now 10 Fine Gael councillors, 10 Fianna Fáil councillors and 9 Sinn Féin councillors sitting on Dublin City Council.

The Green Party hold 8 seats, followed by the Social Democrats who hold 9 seats.

Independents and others hold 11 seats, while Labour hold 4 seats and People Before Profit have won two seats.

Ballymun-Finglas

First time candidate Gavin Pepper was elected in Ballymun-Finglas on the eleventh count.

He was followed in quick succession by People Before Profit’s Conor Reddy, the Social Democrats’ Mary Callaghan and Sinn Féin candidates Anthony Connaghan and Leslie Kane.

The first councillor elected to the area was Keith Connolly of Fianna Fáil.

Two incumbents lost their seats in the race, with Fianna Fáil’s Briege MacOscar and the Green Party’s Caroline Conroy unsuccessful in their re-election bids.

Artane-Whitehall

The final area in Dublin to declare their councillors, Artane-Whitehall has re-elected Fianna Fáil incumbent Racheal Batten.

Sinn Féin’s Edel Moran was elected on count 11, followed by a sweep of elections in the final count.

Social Democrats candidates Jesslyn Henry and Aisling Silke took seats along with independent John Lyons and Fianna Fáil’s Declan Flanagan.

Ballyfermot-Drimnagh

Lord Mayor Daithí de Róiste was beat out for the final seat in Ballyfermot-Drimnagh by former Olympic boxer Philip Sutcliffe.

Right to Change councillor Sophie Nicoullaud also lost her seat.

Independent Vincent Jackson, People Before Profit candidate Hazel de Nortúin, Green Party candidate Ray Cunningham and

Sinn Féin councillor Daithí Doolan – who also ran for Europe -was the first elected for Ballyfermot-Drimnagh.

South West Inner City

Green Party incumbent Michael Pidgeon topped the poll and was elected on the first count yesterday.

He was followed by Labour candidate Darragh Moriarty, Social Democrat Jen Cummins, Fianna Fáil’s Ammar Ali and Sinn Féin’s Máire Devine.

Cabra-Glasnevin

All 7 seats have been filled in Cabra-Glasnevin, where independent incumbent Cieran Perry took the first seat.

He was followed by Green Party candidate Feljin Jose, who topped the poll when it came to first preference votes in the area.

The remaining councillors were elected on count 15, when Fine Gael candidates Colm O’Rourke and Gayle Ralph were elected alongside Fianna Fáil candidate John Stephens, Social Democrat Cat O’Driscoll and incumbent Sinn Féin councillor Séamas McGratten.

North Inner City

Fine Gael councillor Ray McAdam retained his seat in the North Inner City, where Green Party candidate Janet Horner and independent Christy Burke were been elected.

The rest of the seats were filled by independent Malachy Steenson, independent Nial Ring, Sinn Féin’s Janice Boylan and Social Democrat Daniel Ennis.

South East Inner City

Sinn Féin candidate Kourtney Kenny was elected for the South East Inner City followed by shouts of “gwan the girlos” as the count results were announced.

Fine Gael’s Danny Byrne, independent Mannix Flynn, Social Democrats candidate Cian Farrell and Green Party councillor Claire Byrne also won seats

Donaghmede

A bonanza in the final counts for multiple electoral areas saw the four remaining seats filled in Donaghmede after the election of Tom Brabazon in the first count.

Fianna Fáil candidate Daryl Barron, Sinn Féin’s Míchéal MacDonnacha, Social Democrat candidate Paddy Monahan and Fine Gael’s Supriya Singh were also elected.

Malachy Steenson elected in North Inner City Dublin

Kimmage-Rathmines

The six councillors elected to Kimamge-Rathmines were Fiona Connelly (LAB), Pat Dunne (RTC), Eoin Hayes (SD), Patrick Kinsella (FG), Carolyn Moore (GP) and Punam Rane (FG).

Clontarf

In Clontarf, all seats have been filled by Catherine Stocker (SD), Deirdre Heney (FF), Naoise Ó Muirí (FG), Donna Cooney (GP) and Alison Field (LAB).

Pembroke

The first local electoral area to fill all seats was Pembroke, where Green Party councillor Hazel Chu and incumbent James Geoghegan of Fine Gael were both elected on the first count.

Fine Gael’s Emma Blain, Labour’s Dermot Lacey and Fianna Fáil’s Rory Hogan followed.
