LOOK: ‘Church Pants Ballers’ join local basketball tournament

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — By now, you’ve probably seen the viral photos of an Amish basketball team – hooping it up in the inner city.

So what’s the story? WANE 15 tracked down the man who put on the tournament last Saturday.

Rezz Gold puts on the outdoor tournament at least once a month in the summer. He says it’s not the first time for the Amish team – known as Church Pants Ballers – joined in on the fun. Out of ten teams – the team made the finals but had to stop when they ran out of daylight.

Why does Rezz think the pictures – which he said the team approved – went viral?

“Maybe just because like it just out of the norm and the area and everything but yeah, they’ve been here previously,” Gold said. “It brings people together and shows you’ve learned a lot from that. So that’s one good thing about it, though.”

Gold went on to explain that these tournaments are really meant to bring the community together, whether from the inner city or the country.

“Each team has their own story, so it’s good to have that unity,” Gold said.

The next tournament at Reservoir Park is August 10. You can find all of the information on RezzFest 24 on the Eventbrite website. The Church Pants Ballers are not yet confirmed to be there.
