Love Island’s Patsy Field opened up to Munveer Jabbal about her disability and how living with Erb’s Palsy impacts her life on Wednesday’s episode.
The office administrator, 29, has previously shared details of living with Erb’s palsy – a condition characterized by weakness and loss of motion in the arm – which she developed during her traumatic birth at Lewisham hospital.
She has undergone several operations on her arm including muscle transplants and nerve transplants to improve the quality of her movement.
And after a few days in the villa without mentioning it to anyone she chose to speak to Munveer, 30, about it.
She said: ‘There is one big thing that I was going to bring up. I haven’t really spoken to anyone about it.’
As Munveer said he was ‘all ears’, Patsy explained: ‘I’ve got a disability, basically. I haven’t said anything to anyone yet because it’s an awkward thing to bring up.
‘It’s a disability in my arm – I’ve got no strength, anything above shoulder height I can’t lift.’
She added: ‘Sometimes you think, I don’t know, that having something different you don’t know if everyone is going to find it completely sexy. But being different is cool.’
Being supportive, Munveer sweetly replied: ‘Absolutely. I really appreciate you sharing that with me.’
Ahead of the new series kicking off on Monday night Patsy has told how producers have ‘covered all bases’ to ‘look after her’ during the stint on the show.
She told The Sun: ‘No stone has been left unturned when it comes to ‘am I happy to go in there and get involved with day to day activities’ and stuff like that.’
‘There are things that will be interesting I guess, for other people to see on camera that I can’t do. I struggle to put my hair up and stuff.
‘But I always just kind of find something to rest my arm on, or I often – you’ll probably see me in there – I’m using my friend’s shoulder to put my arm on, so I can lift it up and do my hair.
‘So you’ll definitely as as the show plays out, you’ll be able to see things I can and can’t do.’
She has previously said of her disability and childhood: ‘I was a normal baby at birth or should have been, but I had a birth injury or disability.
‘From there I have had a few operations, muscle transplants, nerve transplants to get it to where it is now, which I am happy with and I know for other people with the condition, it is in a good way.
‘It’s something I’ve had for all of my life that I get on with and I don’t know any different, day to day for me it’s quite a small part of who I am.’
Before going into the villa Patsy shared her hopes she can inspire other people living with a disability to feel as body confident as she confirmed she will be sharing details of her story with her co-stars.
She said: ‘I am really looking forward to speaking about it in the villa and hopefully people will be able to watch and understand from my explanation a little more about.
‘I’m really hoping there will be people all over the country who have similar things – and I know people with exactly the same condition, who will see me doing something like this and think ‘wow I would never go for something like that and she’s doing it and she’s so confident and body confident and I can be the same.’
It came after Patsy admitted she has ‘cheated’ and ‘broken hearts’ in past relationships and says she is prepared to ‘step on toes’ in the villa.
She vowed ‘I’m going to get my man’ and explained her competitive nature will contribute to the way she behaves on the show, and she will be looking after ‘number one.’
She confessed to ‘walking over’ and betraying ex-partners but says she’s never gone as far as to sleep with another man when she’s been committed to someone else.
Speaking to MailOnline, she said: ‘I have cheated, probably quite a few times.
‘But I don’t know, what do you class as cheating? I’ve never had sex with anyone else while I’ve been in a relationship but definitely, you know, some loose lips… a couple of snogs, oops!’
She continued: ‘I’ve had some interesting dating experiences, but all of my ex-boyfriends have been really nice, and I’ve found I’m probably the one who’s broken their hearts… and I couldn’t say more nice things about the guys I’ve actually been in relationships with.
‘The sort of guy I would like to see in the villa, I am a really confident and outgoing person so I definitely really need someone who will match me in that sense because I can find if a guy will let me walk all over him, I will, given the opportunity. I need someone confident and sure about themselves but not too arrogant.’
When it comes to dating on the show, Patsy says she won’t be taking any prisoners.
She added: ‘Yes, I am prepared to step on people’s toes, especially right at the beginning.
‘I will be going in there with a lovely group of girls but girls that I don’t know and it is a dating show and we’re all in there to find someone… I do have a competitive streak and I like to win… I’m gonna get my man.
‘I have girl code with all my friends who I have known a really long time of course but unless I make some really strong connections but for the most part, we have all gone in there by ourselves and we have to think about no1.’
Love Island returns Thursday night at 9pm on ITV2.
WHY LOVE ISLAND? The pool in Portsmouth is not giving. I’ve tried dating, speaking to people on social media and it just hasn’t been successful. Applying was a spontaneous thing, I didn’t expect to get here!
WHAT WILL YOU BRING TO THE VILLA? My girls are my rocks and I’m theirs so I’ll be a good friend as well as going in there to find a man. I like dressing up so I’ll bring style, and I’d like to think I’m quite funny so I’ll make people laugh. Bringing honesty as well – I’m good at picking up on people’s personality traits and side-eyeing those who might be a liar.
