Male teen arrested following alleged assault of woman in wooded area in Co Cork

A male teenager has been arrested as part of the investigation into an alleged assault on a woman in Newmarket, Co Cork earlier this month.

The incident occurred while the woman, aged in her 30s, was walking on the Island Wood forest trails at around 7.10pm on June 6.

The woman did not require medical attention following the incident.

Gardaí investigating the alleged assault in Island Wood have since arrested a male juvenile in his teens, a garda spokesperson confirmed.

He is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at a Garda Station in West Cork.

Gardaí in Mallow are continuing to appeal for witnesses to this incident, including any road users who were travelling in the vicinity of Island Wood on the outskirts of Newmarket, and surrounding areas on Thursday 6 June between 4pm and 10pm.

“Anyone who may have camera footage (including dash cam and action cameras) is asked to make this available to Gardaí,” a spokesperson said.

“Any person who was walking, cycling, running or visiting the Island Wood walking trails that evening and who may have noticed any unusual activity, is asked to contact investigating Gardaí.

“Anyone with information which may assist Gardaí in their investigation is asked to contact Mallow Garda Station on 022 31450, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.”
