Man, 40s, dead and another hospitalised after Donegal diving tragedy

One man has died and another is being treated in hospital following a diving tragedy off the coast of Donegal today.

The incident happened around 12.40pm this afternoon in the Teelin Bay area.

A local diving event was taking place in the area at the time.

The two men were recovered from the water.

One of the men who is in his 40s was pronounced dead at the scene.

A second man, in his 60s, was rushed to University Hospital Galway where he is being treated.

Local coroner Dr Denis McCauley was informed of the incident and a post mortem is due to take place in the coming days.

A number of local rescue services took part in the operation including the Killybegs Coast Guard and the rescue 118 Helicopter.

A Garda spokesperson confirmed: “Gardaí received a request for assistance form the Coastguard following an incident in Teelin Bay, Co. Donegal on Saturday afternoon, 22nd June 2024.

“The incident occurred at around 12.30pm. Two men were recovered from the water. One of these males, a man in his 40s, was later pronounced dead at the scene.

“The local coroner has been notified and a post-mortem will take place in the coming days.

“The second man, aged in his 60s, is receiving treatment at University Hospital Galway.”
