Man accused of burgling gym in city centre promises to stay out of Cork while on bail
A burglary at a gym in Cork City centre resulted in gardaí arresting a man and objecting to bail being granted to him.
Applying for bail, the accused said he would stay out of Cork City except for court appearances and only come to Cork when his wife was with him.
Garda Conor Cronin arrested Connie Foley of Ceol na nÉan, Gould’s Hill, Mallow, County Cork, and brought him before Cork District Court.
It was alleged that the burglary was committed at Blue Nile, French Church Street, Cork. Garda Conor Cronin objected to bail being granted to the 43-year-old in respect of the alleged crime on Monday, June 9.
Objecting to bail, Garda Cronin said: “On June 10 an injured party reported a burglary incident on June 9 at the Blue Nile gym on the second floor of the premises at 14 French Church Street.
“It was alleged that a male and a female entered an office forcefully that they did not have permission to be in and stole a Dell laptop and a pair of Nike Air runners. Gardaí viewed CCTV.
“Connie Foley was arrested on June 18 and was wearing clothing seen on the CCTV of the incident. Gardaí have a serious concern that if granted bail he will commit further serious offences.”
Defence solicitor, Shane Collins-Daly, said: “He did not make any admissions when questioned. Drink is his main issue. I don’t think drugs are an issue for Mr Foley. He is now serious about getting help for his addiction and has been seeing a counsellor in Mallow.”
Applying for bail, Connie Foley said: “I will turn up in court (if granted bail).
Judge Mary Dorgan: “Gardaí fear you would commit further offences on bail – will you?” Connie Foley replied: “I will not, your honour.”
Concern was also expressed about the defendant coming to Cork City and committing offences. Mr Foley said: “Any time I come to Cork it will be for court and I will bring my wife with me.”
Judge Mary Dorgan said she would remand the accused in custody with consent to bail until June 26. Bail terms include a €1,000 bond, on which €400 has to be lodged in cash, signing on twice a day at Mallow garda station, staying out of Cork except for court business, have no drink or drug and handing up his passport.
