A man and a woman were rushed to hospital after they were viciously attacked in broad daylight on a busy street in Listowel this morning.

The pair are understood to have been walking together when they were set upon by a female and two males on Market Street at roughly 10.40am today, leaving numerous shoppers in the immediate vicinity shocked by the vicious spectacle.

Gardaí rushed to the scene, calming matters quickly, but not before the duo had incurred a number of injuries – none of which are believed to be life-threatening. The man and woman are receiving treatment for their wounds at University Hospital Kerry and are expected to make a full recovery.

Gardaí described the level of force used against the pair in the shocking attack as ‘considerable’.

A woman in her thirties was arrested in connection with the incident and is detained under section four of the Criminal Justice Act in Listowel Garda Station, where she is being questioning at present.

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to the violent incident to make contact to help them with their investigation of the matter. It’s understood they are to harvest any CCTV footage of the attack on Market Street to aid the probe also.

The Kerryman understands the five were all known to each other.

“We would appeal for any witnesses to contact us to help in our investigation of this violent disorder,” Sergeant Tim O’Keeffe of Listowel Garda Station said. The Garda station can be contacted at (068)50820.
