Man dies in Kerry crash

A man has died in a car crash in Co Kerry.

Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of the incident on the Ring of Kerry at Coad near Caherdaniel at around 6pm, where it is believed the man’s vehicle left the road and hit a tree.

The man, aged in his 70s, was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.

His body has since been removed to University Hospital Kerry where a postmortem will take place.

The scene is currently preserved for gardaí to carry out a technical examination of the scene.

The road will remain closed overnight on the N70 Ring of Kerry.  Traffic diversions are currently in place.

A spokesperson for Kerry County Council added that there will be no traffic through the Ring of Kerry Road until 2pm on Friday.

“Traffic between Sneem and Waterville is restricted to local access only,” the spokesperson added.

“Investigating gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward. Additionally, they are requesting those with camera footage, including motorists with dashcam from the area at the time, to make it available to them,” a garda spokesperson said.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact Killarney Garda Station 064 667 1160 or the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111,” the spokesperson added.

The latest fatality brings the number of people that have died on Irish roads up to 102 so far this year, 13 more than this time last year.
