Man undergoing treatment for septicaemia tests +ve for Zika in Pune – Times of India

PUNE: A 61-year-old man admitted to a private hospital for gastroenteritis tested positive for Zika infection on Friday, in a chance detection.

With this, the confirmed patient tally has risen to 19 so far, including 10 pregnant women and one Saswad resident.

The man, a resident of Hadapsar, had developed septicaemia and fever, following which he sought medical care at the Noble hospital on July 4. This is when he was tested for all fever-related infections and came positive for Zika.

PMC officials said Erandwane had reported maximum six cases so far, followed by Mundhwa (3), Pashan (3), Kharadi (3), Dahanukar Colony (2), Ambegaon (1) and Yerwada (1).

PMC’s assistant health officer Dr Rajesh Dighe said, “The patient had developed symptoms like fever, vomiting, diarrhoea and weakness on July 1. He was admitted to the hospital on July 4. He has recently travelled to Saswad.”

Dr Kalpana Baliwant, acting chief medical officer, PMC, said, “We are aggressively testing pregnant women, which is why we are able to report so many cases within the city. So far, we have sent blood samples of 152 pregnant women, of which 22 were sent on Friday alone. There are a total of 267 pregnant women in the areas with confirmed cases.”

Besides, the Pune district administration has sent blood samples of 12 pregnant women after a Saswad man tested positive for Zika on July 11. A total of 765 households have been screened for the infection in Saswad. Dr Sachin Desai, district health officer, said, “We have sent the blood samples of the family members of the Saswad patient too. Their test reports are still awaited.”
