Man who left note and two unopened condoms in Cork city apartment during burglary sentenced

Bizarre behaviour by a man who burgled three apartments where a note with his name and phone number and two unopened condoms were left in one young woman’s home, was sentenced today.

Defence solicitor Eddie Burke said the accused man lapsed from taking his depot injection for an underlying mental illness and ended up in this bizarre behaviour.

Judge Mary Dorgan had adjourned sentencing numerous times for psychiatric reports and related issues but finalised the case with an overall jail term of ten months, the last four months of which were suspended on condition that he would comply with the directions of the probation service for the next 18 months.

The six-month custodial term was backdated to take account of time Szymon Kaczorowski has already spent in custody.

34-year-old Szymon Kaczorowski of Farran, Ovens, County Cork, has been in custody since December 2023 in relation to the case.

The background to the crimes was that on December 10 2023, Szymon Kaczorowski gained entry to a gated apartment complex of Mardyke Hall apartments on Mardyke Walk.

While in one bedroom he left a note with his name, address and phone number on it for the injured party. He left two unused condoms with this note. This apartment was occupied by two other students in their rooms.

Then he entered a second apartment where the female resident was at home alone.

While she was in the kitchen she noticed the door opening and closing and she went to the hallway where she was confronted by a man unknown to her who left, but remained in the building. She was visibly shaken when gardaí arrived.

In a third apartment where male students were sharing accommodation, he tried to enter bedrooms but only succeeded in getting into the living room where he helped himself to some drinks.
