A father of six who “recklessly” bought stolen razors when they were being sold door to door has been spared jail.

Gardaí found the razors worth €135 in Troy Sprat’s house when they were carrying out an unrelated search, a court heard.

Judge Gerard Jones gave him a one-month suspended sentence.

Sprat (39), with an address at Primrose Grove, Darndale pleaded guilty to handling stolen property.

Dublin District Court heard gardaí searched the accused’s home under warrant on the morning of August 6 last year and found Gillette razor blades with a total value of €135.

The property had shop security tags still attached and the accused had no proof of purchase.

The court heard Sprat had 66 previous convictions, the last of which was in 2016.

Gardaí had gone to the address over something unrelated to the accused, his solicitor Matthew De Courcy said.

Sprat had bought the razors from an “individual who was selling things door to door”.

He accepted he was reckless in doing so, Mr De Courcy said.

Sprat had no drink or drugs issues, he said. The solicitor asked Judge Jones to take account of the fact that Sprat had no convictions in the last eight years.

The judge suspended the sentence for two years and set recognisances in the event of an appeal.
