Manogue wins high-profile Kilkenny golf competition

The Kilkenny Junior Scratch Cup (sponsored by Kilkenny Block), was held on Saturday, May 24 with local player Sean Manogue winning the competition.

The first round saw Manogue lay down a serious marker with an opening 71 gross which left him four shots clear of his nearest competitor.

In fact, this opening round would have featured as one of the top scores in the Senior Scratch Cup held the weekend before. A second round 79 to add to the 71 saw the Kilkenny man emerge as the clear winner by five shots.

Captain Fergal Cantwell thanked all the volunteers and club staff for their commitment and dedication to making the event such a success. Alan O’Rourke presented the trophy and the prizes on behalf of the sponsor Kilkenny Block.

Results (Kilkenny members unless stated): 1 Seán Manogue, 150; 2 Nathan Ryan, 155 (B9 second 18); 3 Leonard O’Mahony (Mullingar), 155; 4 Bobby O’Mahoney, 156 (B18); 5 Kevin Murphy (Royal Curragh), 156; 6 Thomas Buckley, 157 (B18).

Nett: 1 John Halpin (Laytown Bettystown), 143 (B18); 2 Brian Spratt, 143 (B9 of second 18); 3 Ivan Browne, 143.

First: 18 Gross: Darragh Murphy (Castletroy), 77.

Second 18 Gross: Paul Mitchell (Longford), 77.
