PARKERSBURG — Marty Vierheller has retired as head girls basketball coach at Parkersburg Catholic, PCHS athletic director Larry Thompson told the Parkersburg News and Sentinel/Marietta Times Saturday.

Vierheller spent 18 seasons as the Crusaderettes’ head coach, guiding the program to the Class AA state championship in 2022. Vierheller assisted longtime head coach Dick Wildt before taking over the team following the program’s ninth state title in 2006.

Vierheller’s squad in 2020 was undefeated going into state tournament play, which was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Crusaderettes picked up right where they left off in 2020-21, going undefeated all the way up to the state title game, where they lost to Wyoming East. Catholic made it back to the state finals in 2021-22, this time taking down the Warriors. Over the last two seasons, Catholic went 27-17. Under Vierheller’s direction, PCHS has won nine straight Mary ‘O’ Crusaderette championships.
