Mason Greenwood protests erupt with Man Utd on verge of selling forward
Marseille fans have pleaded for their club to withdraw from the deal for Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood, venting their disapproval online.
An internet campaign has sprouted up among supporters who oppose the transfer, warning of “irreparable damage” should the Greenwood move go ahead.
Ligue 1’s Marseille seems to be leading a pack that includes Lazio for the United frontman’s signature, with the Premier League side likely to ask for around $44.8 million for the 22-year-old player – a sharp drop from his previous valuation.
However, a powerful statement was recently posted on OM Forum by key supporters, cautioning against such a transfer and highlighting potential repercussions to the club’s esteemed place within its wider community.

The statement reads: “At a time when negotiations for the arrival of Mason Greenwood are announced as becoming increasingly advanced, it seems necessary to explain, once again and before the damage becomes irreversible, why this transfer seems inconceivable in view of the values displayed by the club and why it would mean for many of us a red line that would irreparably damage the passion that we have for this club.”
In addition, a social media outcry under the hashtag #GreenwoodNotWelcome echoes these sentiments, emphasizing fans’ dissatisfaction with the possible signing. The forum article further criticizes the Marseille management’s decision-making process, insinuating that they are following an ‘end justifies the means’ strategy, choosing to ignore their societal role in the pursuit of sportive excellence.
Greenwood’s career at Manchester United has been on hold since January 2022 due to serious allegations that led to his arrest. Although charges of attempted rape, assault and coercive control were dropped after key witnesses withdrew their cooperation, the forward has not featured for the Red Devils since.
Despite considering a return for Greenwood, United faced significant opposition from fans, prompting them to send him on loan to Getafe in Spain last term, where he netted 10 times in 36 appearances. His performances have caught the eye of Italian giants Juventus.
Greenwood was seen at United’s training facilities on Monday, but rather than joining pre-season training, it’s believed he was there for discussions regarding his future with the club.
In other news, Marseille has appointed Roberto de Zerbi as their new head coach following his departure from Brighton and Hove Albion. De Zerbi, known for his dynamic approach to the game, shared his philosophy in his inaugural press conference, stating: “From a footballing point of view, you have to play with courage, have fun on the pitch while knowing what you have to do.”
