Matt Damon and his ‘bag of cans’ now immortalised on SuperValu shopping bag in Dalkey
After shooting in the south of France in February of 2020, the cast and crew of the movie, The Last Duel, moved to Ireland for filming in Wicklow, Meath, Kilkenny and Dublin.
However, the first Covid-19 lockdown intervened, leaving Matt Damon and his family trapped in the south Dublin seaside town.
He quickly became a local curiosity and was spotted in various local restaurants, cafes, and shops before a photo of him visiting the Vico Baths with a shopping bag went viral.
Speculation on social media quickly moved to whether Matt had gone ‘full-Irish’ and was carrying a “bag of cans”, before the star himself revealed in an interview with local Dublin radio station Spin that it was only his swimming gear in the SuperValu bag.
Now, to make sure nobody forgets that significant moment, Rushe’s SuperValu in Dalkey has released a new reusable bag with a drawing of the famous Matt Damon photo.
Fans of the Hollywood actor were delighted with one saying: “They should sell cloth tote bags of that. I’d buy one.” Another added: “I just picked up two.”

The Jason Bourne star previously spoke to the Irish Independent about lockdown, Dalkey and shopping in Supervalu.
“I had no idea that would be such a thing,” he laughed. “But to be fair, where else do you shop in Dalkey?”
He has fond memories of that magical Vico Road bathing spot so cherished by locals.
“It’s incredible there, it’s just beautiful, I had no idea. We got so lucky, and we really fell in love with it in Dalkey,” he said.
“What a part of the world that is, and the community just kind of absorbed us, it was really a bit like a fairytale. So, I had nothing to complain about, that first lockdown was fantastic.
“It was unbelievably fortuitous, the way things worked out for my family because we ended up in Dalkey right as everything locked down, and by coincidence, my kids were with me,” he added.
