Penalty for Mayo!
Drama as Mayo get a penalty because of a foot block. Odhran Lynch gets a yellow card
Both sides went into 2024 among the hot favourites to win the Sam Maguire but one team’s season will come to a premature end on Saturday evening as Mayo meet Derry in their preliminary quarter-final.
It has been an up-and-down year for both sides with the season having its peaks and troughs. Derry appeared to be the team to beat when they topped the league standings and won an enthralling league final against Dublin.
But it has been a poor Championship for the side, starting with a heavy defeat by Donegal and followed up with losses to Galway and Armagh.
Mayo have had a typically chaotic year which has involved some brilliant battles, including losing out narrowly in the Connacht final and drawing last week against Dublin.
Today’s game takes place at MacHale Park in Castlebar with throw-in set 6.30 pm. The game is available to watch live on GAAGO.
The Irish Mirror will have live updates of the game right here so make sure to stay tuned to all the updates.

Gareth McKinless’s effort is blocked but he gets a second chance and pops it over

A nice score from Brendan Rogers

Aidan O’Shea turns over Eoin McEvoy and the Derry man doesn’t release the ball and the free is now in scoring range.
O’Donoghue puts it over and Mayo lead.

Tommy Conroy’s shot is flagged wide but the umpires don’t seem too confident in their decision.

Super from Aidan O’Shea as he brushes past two Derry men and pops the score

Odhran Lynch comes all the way up the field but is a deer in headlights when he gets to the full forward line and turns the ball over.
Tommy Conroy from long range and just one in it.

We are back underway in MacHale Park

Mickey Harte will be angry with Brendan Rogers there as he fouls O’Shea on the 21 metre line while the ball was half way. O’Donoghue puts it over.
If Derry could draw up a blue print in how they would like a match to go that was it, defensively taking over and then counter quickly to pop some scores.
19:05Darragh Culhane
Mickey Harte will be delighted with the defensive effort, the pressure on the ball once Mayo creep inside the 45 metre line is immense and they force a bad shot from Ryan O’Donoghue
19:02Darragh Culhane
Pretty brutal stuff going forward from Mayo as they needlessly give it away. McGuigan is fouled by David McBrien and it was needless.
No problem for McGuigan to slot that one over and they lead by four. Worrying stuff for Mayo as we hit 31 minutes.
18:58Darragh Culhane
Really good defensive effort from Derry and they don’t give Mayo an inch and then turn the ball over after a poor kick pass and then go up and Lachlan Murray scores again. His fourth of the day.
18:56Darragh Culhane
Few better at them long range scores than Lachlan Murray. Brilliant again
18:56Darragh Culhane
Mayo will feel aggrieved after two very cynical fouls and the referee shows no cards. There’s a goal chance but it goes just wide.
18:53Darragh Culhane
Derry concede a free and Ryan O’Donoghue makes no mistake as he slots it over
18:50Darragh Culhane
Chrissy McKaigue very lucky to not be in the book for a drag down of Aidan O’Shea. The Mayo man shows his frustration a play later with a similar tackle
18:49Darragh Culhane
This looks bad. Jordan Flynn and Conor Doherty come together accidentally but Flynn looks to be in a bad way on the ground.
He gets back to his feet so thankfully there is nothing too serious in terms of injuries and he plays on. Doherty comes over and shakes hand and we move on.
18:44Darragh Culhane
That is a beaut of a score from Lachlan Murray
18:42Darragh Culhane
Derry edge back in front but Bradley then hits one wide

Hello and welcome to live coverage as Mayo take on Derry in a mouthwatering preliminary quarter-final.
One of the big guns from this year’s Championship will be sent packing early with today’s game taking place as MacHale Park at 6.30 pm.
Derry went into the Championships with serious All-Ireland aspirations but after a heavy defeat to Donegal as well as two convincing losses to Galway and Armagh means their expectations have been seriously dampened.
