Going back in time to 1977, it was Dick Brams whos regarded as the “Father of the Happy Meal.”
As McDonald’s advertising manager and along with his team, Brams drew inspiration from the Ronald Menu and began conjuring up the concept that would rule the US market.
First introduced to the United States in June 1979, the Happy Meal was originally presented in a box adorned with McDonald’s Golden Arches, covered in games, jokes and comic strips. Initially dubbed the “Circus Wagon Happy Meal”, the iconic kids’ meal was paired with toys such as a McDoodler stencil, a puzzle lock, a McWrist wallet, an ID bracelet, a spinning top, and a McDonaldland character eraser.
As time went on, the allure of the toys packaged within the Happy Meals grew significantly. The company often based the toys off popular movies, TV shows, and cultural phenomena.
Memorable collaborations include partnerships with big names like Disney, Hot Wheels, Barbie, and various animated movies.
Responding to heightened concerns revolving around nutritional content of fast food, McDonald’s undertook various changes to create a healthier Happy Meal. In 2004, apple slices were introduced as an alternative to chips.
Later, by 2011, the brand tweaked the meals to include fewer chips and incorporate more fruits or vegetables, ultimately leading to their commitment in 2018 to cut down on calories, salt, and sugar in Happy Meals.
