Memorable Herbertstown family racing success at Fairyhouse

LIMERICK jockey Sylvia O’Donnell rode her second winner when partnering the seven-year-old Extensio to take the 14-furlong rated race at Fairyhouse on Wednesday last.

Owned by her mother Una and trained by her Herbertstown-based father Pat, the 7/2 chance came from a little off the pace to lead at the furlong pole and he had a little in hand in beating the Johnny Murtagh-trained 10/11 favourite Sixpack. The winning jockey landed her first success on the same horse in the 2022 Ladies’ Derby at the Curragh.

The Billy Lee-ridden Jancis brought her tally to two wins from as many starts when scoring an impressive success in the Group 3 Irish Stallion Farms EBF Brownstown Stakes at Leopardstown on Thursday.

Trained for owner/breeder Arturo Cousino by Willie McCreery, the three-year-old added to a clearcut maiden win over the same course and distance last month when scoring by two and a quarter lengths for the Ballingarry jockey from the Jessica Harrington-trained Bluedrum at odds of 11/2.

Less than 24 hours after Ronan Whelan rode his first winner for trainer Aidan O’Brien, Lee earlier notched up his first success for the Ballydoyle maestro when partnering the two-year-old Exactly to land the seven-furlong fillies’ maiden. The 15/8 favourite headed Adrian Murray’s front-runner Quens Fury at the furlong-pole and battled well to see off the challenge of Ger Lyons’ 3/1 chance Chantez by a head.

The Paul Flynn-trained Rappell gave Billy Lee his 49th success of the season as he won the near six-furlong handicap at Navan on Saturday. The 4/1 favourite skipped clear inside the final furlong to win by a length and a half from the Micky Fenton-trained 8/1 chance Grand Citadel for owners Neal Flynn and Paddy Maguire.

Conor McNamara and County Tipperary trainer Liam O’Brien took the three-mile handicap hurdle with the 12/1 chance Sunshine Diamond at Wexford on Saturday.

The George Williams-owned five-year-old raced clear from the second-last hurdle to win by an easy eight lengths from 5/2 favourite Mary Michael which was ridden for Henry de Bromhead by Rachael Blackmore.
