Met Eireann forecast big temperature change as Arctic air to hit country
Ireland is bracing for a blast of unseasonably cold weather as Arctic air sweeps down towards the country, weather boffins have announced.
Monday will see some dry spells with temperatures reaching a mild 14C to 19C, with the south likely to enjoy the warmest conditions. Met Eireann has forecast that Tuesday’s temperatures will hover around the same highs, but it’s the North West that’ll get the first taste of the chill.
The big freeze is set to intensify when, in Met Eireann’s words, “the winds veer northwest and increase moderate to fresh gusty in the afternoon”. Wrap up warm because Wednesday is expected to see temperatures plummet to lows of 5C to 9C – and it could feel even colder with the wind-chill factor in play, reports the Irish Mirror.

This Arctic chill is quite out of the ordinary for this time of year, so much so that even parts of Scotland might see a dusting of summer snow. Local weather guru, Alan O’Reilly, has pinpointed Wednesday as the day when the mercury takes a dive. Posting on X, he advised Carlow Weather’s 115,000 followers: “Turning colder from Wednesday as much cooler air moves down from the North but not much rain thankfully.”
Met Eireann National Outlook:.
Monday night will be mostly cloudy with patchy light rain moving in from the west, turning more persistent for Atlantic coastal counties towards dawn. Temperatures won’t fall below 10C to 13C in light to moderate west to southwest winds, freshening along Atlantic coasts with the more persistent rain.
Tuesday will be largely cloudy and damp at first with outbreaks of light rain or drizzle. Sunny spells will develop in the northwest during the morning, extending across the country by early afternoon.
Some showers will follow, most frequent in the north where some may turn heavy. Highest temperatures of 13C to 18C, coolest in the north and west, but feeling a good bit cooler as the winds veer northwest and increase moderate to fresh gusty in the afternoon.
Tuesday night will be dry and clear for much of the country overnight. However, it will be cloudier in northern and western parts with scattered showers.
Lowest temperatures of 5C to 9C in easing west to northwest winds.
Wednesday will be a much cooler day with sunny spells and scattered showers, most frequent in the north. Highest temperatures of just 11C to 15C in moderate westerly winds, fresher near western and northern coasts.
Thursday has some uncertainty in the details but showers are likely first before turning cloudier from the west through the morning with rain moving into the north and west later. Driest in the south and east.
Highest temperatures of 11C to 15C generally in mostly moderate westerly winds.
