Mini Camp: Men’s Basketball – Abilene Christian University Athletics

ABILENE – Men’s basketball concluded their two summer camp sessions last week. This marked two weeks of skill development and unforgettable experiences for young basketball enthusiasts. The most recent camp, held from June 24 to 27 at the ACU campus, drew over 100 young participants that were engaged to learn the ACU way around the court.

Head coach Brette Tanner, welcomed parents and their children to campus to show what it is to be an ACU basketball player. Tanner, entering his fourth season as head coach, provided comprehensive training sessions under his and his staff’s direction. Participants engaged in drills, scrimmages, and strategic workshops aimed at enhancing their basketball fundamentals and understanding of the game.

With two NCAA Div. I tournament appearances as an assistant in his time at ACU, Tanner finds camps engaging and fun for not just the young players involved, but his team in general.

“Basketball camp is my favorite time of year, said Tanner. “It’s where our program really gets to make a difference.”

Tanner went into detail about why his staff and players enjoy teaching young athletes.

“We get to assist in the development of a young person with their basketball skills,” Tanner said. “But more importantly, they learn discipline and begin to develop a healthier lifestyle both physically and socially. It’s awesome to be a part of.”

The young basketball players had many things to say about their time spent at ACU and with the basketball program:

Ryan, age 9: “The camp is awesome and it’s going good. My favorite part has been playing free throw champions. It’s when you’ll go against another team, and you have to make the shot. And if the person misses, they have to sit out. But if the other person makes it, they’re out of the game.”

Noah, age 11: “I like learning about how to shoot and pass. They had us try to come off the screen and shoot.”

Oscar, age 12: “My favorite ACU basketball player is Damien Daniels. I’ve been to this camp since I was little, and Damien has been my coach for every single camp and the team games.”

Camden, age 13: “My favorite part of camp has been the competitions. Like, free throw competitions, hot shot, and five versus five.”
