Minister calls for defence budget to be doubled to €3bn over Russian threat

Ireland’s defence spending should be doubled to support a fleet of at least 12 ships as well as combat aircraft, according to EU Affairs Minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill — because of Russian aggression and the changing circumstances in Europe.

Writing in today’s Sunday Independent, the minister of state with responsibility for EU Affairs & Defence says the Government needs to “work steadily” towards a €3bn annual spend on defence.
