Moment Scottish golf ace Robert MacIntyre is backed by Rangers anthem
Robert MacIntyre made history with his maiden PGA Tour title – a long awaited win for a Scot.
What he did not expect was to be backed by a RANGERS anthem at the Canadian Open.
He held off the American Benjamin Griffin by one stroke to claim the trophy.
The Oban-born golfer held back tears when he knocked his second shot at 18 to 12 feet, finishing with a 72-hole total of 16-under 264 to become the fifth player from Scotland to win on the Tour.
That is a first for anyone from Scottish soil since 1940, meaning he joins a list of fellow countrymen in Sandy Lyle, Paul Lawrie, Martin Laird and Russell Knox.
It was an extra special win for the 27-year-old who was partnered on the course by his father Dougie, who also happens to be his caddie.
Speaking after his winning final round, an emotional MacIntyre told CBS: “Goose bumps. It’s incredible.
“It’s a dream of mine to play golf for a living.
“It’s been a dream of mine to win on the PGA Tour.
“I just can’t believe I done it with my dad on the bag. The guy’s taught me the way I play golf.
“I was in a dog fight there.
“Obviously, Ben made it difficult coming in the stretch.
“He played well.
“It’s just incredible to do this with my dad on the bag and have my girlfriend here and I’m sure there’s a party going on back home in Oban.”
But a party had already started before he even tee’d off at the RBC Canadian Open at the Hamilton Golf and Country Club in Ontario.
That was down to a rowdy bunch of supporters singing his name to the tune of Gers anthem ‘Follow Follow’.
They chanted: “Follow follow, we will follow Bobby.
“Anywhere, everywhere, we will follow on.”
One of them even donned a cap embroiled with a Light Blues badge.
Another fan was interviewed by the media team of the PGA Tour and somewhat explained the singing.
He said: “I didn’t see Bobby win in Scotland, but I saw Bobby win in Canada, which means more to be because that’s where I’m from.
“My mum‘s from Scotland, but I’m from here.
