Monaghan jobs boost on cards as food giant given green light for expansion plans
Monaghan could be in line for a jobs boost after one of its biggest employers was given the go ahead to expand its production centre in Smithboro.
Family-run Greenfield Foods Ltd has been given the green light to undertake two extensions of its purpose built headquarters by local authority planning chiefs.
The plans provide for a single storey extension to the rear of its existing facility to introduce additional loading and storage areas.
The second part of the company’s development plans comprised moves to develop a two storey extension to the front and side of its main offices.
The firm stated the plans were being devised to provide additional office and storage space.
In its ruling, Monaghan County Council approved the submission on the proviso seven conditions are complied with.
Among them included stipulations surrounding environmental protection and visual amenity requirements as well as an obligation on the firm to provide over €5,500 in development contributions.
Greenfield Foods are considered to be among the county’s chief employers with in the region of 100 staff currently on its books.
The planned development is not the first time Ireland’s largest egg packing centre has been the subject of extensive expansion plans.
The company’s packing centre was originally developed in 1998 and further extended in 2005.
In 2011, the packing centre was further refurbished, resulting in the replacement of grading equipment with the newest technology available, including automatic dirt, crack and inclusion detection.
