What is a Lucky 15?
It’s one of those phrases you’re likely to hear when watching racing, so we thought it would be a good idea to explain exactly what a Lucky 15 means and how easy it is to place such a bet.
In short, the Lucky 15 is an acca including four elements, although all four bets don’t have to win to produce a profit/return. The selections are combined into one four-fold accumulator, trebles, doubles and individual singles.
So, the Lucky 15 can be summed up as follows: 1 accumulator, 4 trebles, 6 double, 4 singles = 15 bets
An each-way Lucky 15, as advised below, is therefore 30 bets, and you will get a return of some kind if only one horse places.
WEDNESDAY
15:05 Ascot – Illinois
ILLINOIS found only the subsequent Derby runner-up too good on his last start in the Lingfield trial where he seemed uncomfortable on the track and this step up in trip looks sure to suit. Aidan O’Brien has won this race eight times before and saddles four here, but Illinois is the choice of Ryan Moore, which is significant.
16:25 Ascot – Inspiral
The way INSPIRAL mowed down Warm Heart on her first go over this distance at the Breeders’ Cup suggests she wants ten furlongs these days and her potent turn of foot could be the difference around the bend here. Auguste Rodin and connections will want to make this a stamina test at the trip, but he’ll need to be at his best to resist Inspiral’s late surge.
17:05 Ascot – Wild Tiger
WILD TIGER missed the whole of last season but after a couple of runs in Meydan he returned to the UK better than ever, justifying strong market support to score at Yarmouth in first-time cheekpieces before following up at Goodwood with an impressive performance last month. He’s still progressing on that evidence and can defy a 6 lb rise in the weights under Oisin Murphy.
17:40 Ascot – Elim
ELIM was an impressive winner on her handicap debut at Musselburgh and ran a race full of promise on her comeback at Redcar last month after 13 months off the track. That will have put her spot on for this and she looks to be lurking on a good mark with Ascot straight course specialist Jamie Spencer taking over in the saddle.
THURSDAY
15:05 Ascot – Gilded Water
He had a few options this week but William Haggas has opted for the King George V Stakes for GILDED WATER, the same race he won last year with Desert Hero, and it looks as if he’s been working back from a Royal Ascot handicap from day one with this royal runner. He comes out 3 lb clear on the Timeform ratings and is open to further improvement stepping up in trip again.
15:45 Ascot – Kalpana
KALPANA chased home Inisherin at Newcastle before making a mockery of a mark of 78 when winning by 10 lengths at Newmarket in April and produced a career best when second to Friendly Soul back at HQ last month. She’s progressing with every run and can serve it up to Diamond Rain, who has to be respected having been supplemented by Charlie Appleby.
17:05 Ascot – Native Warrior
The form of the conditions race at Kempton in April has been working it remarkably well with the winner, Notable Speech, winning the 2000 Guineas and the third, Persica, finishing fourth in the London Gold Cup before scoring on Derby weekend at Epsom, and NATIVE WARRIOR can be the latest winner to come from that race. Fourth that day, Karl Burke sent him to Nottingham for a maiden on his next start to protect his mark and it looks to have paid off, sneaking in towards the bottom of the weights on 90.
18:15 Ascot – English Oak
ENGLISH OAK was identified as a horse to follow when chasing him course specialist Rohaan last season and he’s confirmed that impression this year after an encouraging comeback at Newmarket was followed by a four-and-a-half length demolition at Haydock. He’s up 9 lb but that shouldn’t be enough to stop this rapidly progressive son of Wootton Bassett who could be contesting group races before the season is out.
