Nassau police announce stepped up security in response to threat against Cricket World Cup

The Nassau County Police Department is announcing increased security in response to a threat of terrorism against the Cricket World Cup.

The event will be held in a 34,000-seat stadium at Eisenhower Park from June 1 through June 12.

Nassau police have requested a no-fly zone over the area from the FAA. The no-fly zone would also apply to drones.

Police aviation units will be in the air during the event. Everyone entering the stadium must pass through a metal detector. The park will be closed to the public throughout the Cricket World Cup, with the exception of one golf course.

Nassau Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder says the threat is being taken seriously.

“When you’ve got a game and a crowd as big as this everything is credible. We will go through every fine detail when it comes to the security and safety of the residents here in Nassau County,” Ryder said.

The FBI told News 12 in a statement, “FBI New York is aware of threatening online posts concerning the T20 Cricket World Cup matches in Nassau County. While we have no information to indicate a specific threat to the event at this time, FBI New York takes all threats seriously. We continue to work with our federal, state, and local partners, including event organizers, to act upon information as it comes to our attention. We urge the public to remain vigilant and report any and all suspicious activity, individuals, or both to law enforcement immediately.”
