NBA Finals live updates: Everything to know for Celtic vs. Mavericks Game 2 matchup

The Boston Celtics threw the first punch – and it was a big one.

The Celtics won Game 1 of the 2024 NBA Finals in a 107-89 rout over the Dallas Mavericks. It was a balanced attack led by Jayson Tatum (16 points, 11 rebounds, five assists) and Jaylen Brown (22 points, six rebounds, three steals, three blocks).

Kristaps Porzingis, playing in his first game since April 29, became the first player in NBA Finals history with more than 20 points, more than six rebounds and more than three blocks in fewer than 22 minutes played.

The Mavericks had their lowest scoring output of these playoffs, and will attempt to avoid a big hole and get even before the series shifts to Dallas for Games 3 and 4.

Dallas Mavericks guard Luka Doncic has been downgraded to questionable ahead of Sunday night’s game, nursing three injuries: a thoracic contusion, a right knee sprain, and left ankle soreness.

Doncic has not been fully healthy since very early in these NBA playoffs and has been listed as questionable multiple times through the first three rounds. He was seen visibly uncomfortable during practice ahead of Game 2. If the Mavs have any hope of winning the NBA title, or even beating the Celtics a single time in the Finals, they will need Doncic to be on the court. — Jon Hoefling
