NBA Rumors: Warriors’ Klay Thompson Wants at Least 3-Year Contract in Free Agency

Golden State Warriors star guard Klay Thompson reportedly isn’t bringing unrealistic expectations to his first foray into free agency.

Per Monte Poole of NBC Sports, Thompson “realizes he won’t see anything like his expiring contract, a five-year max worth $190 million,” so “league sources indicate he’s seeking an offer of at least three years.”

Poole spoke to Thompson’s former teammate Leandro Barbosa, who also served as an assistant coach with the Warriors after his retirement and has a close relationship with the 34-year-old. Barbosa said Thompson is aware of his limitations at this stage in his career and has a sense of how he’d like to approach negotiations this summer.

“If he goes to a different team – and I’m just giving this scenario – he’s going to have to start all over again,” Barbosa said. “If he stays, this is home for him. This is his house. So, I hope he thinks and he kind of understands the business, what’s the deal, and go from there.”

Thompson is coming off a lackluster season by his standards, as he was relegated to a bench role for the first time since his rookie year and averaged 17.9 points while shooting 38.7 percent from three-point range across 77 appearances. It was his first time averaging under 20 points since the 2013-14 campaign.

While it would be difficult to leave Golden State after playing an integral role in helping the franchise win four NBA championships, Thompson could have the opportunity for an expanded role if he changes his surroundings. Barbosa said he hopes his friend stays put, but he understands that Thompson needs to do what’s best for his career.

“He’s going to have to be really patient,” Barbosa said. “I hope he comes back to the Warriors. I don’t know what’s the situation, but it’s going to be tough. I know the money (in NBA contracts) is going up, and he’s been thinking about the money. But I think he needs to be happy. I think that’s the most important thing.”
