NBA Rumors: Warriors to Hire Jerry Stackhouse, Terry Stotts for Steve Kerr’s Staff

The Golden State Warriors are adding two experienced former head coaches to Steve Kerr’s staff next season.

The Warriors will hire Terry Stotts and Jerry Stackhouse as assistant coaches for next season, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported.

Stotts will serve as Kerr’s lead assistant, according to Wojnarowski.

Stotts previously served as head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers from 2012 to 2021, while Stackhouse coached Vanderbilt from 2019 until he was fired in March.

Stackhouse has previously worked as an assistant for the Memphis Grizzlies and Toronto Raptors in addition to leading Toronto’s G League affiliate Raptors 905 for two seasons.

Prior to taking over in Portland, Stotts had head coaching experience with the Milwaukee Bucks and Atlanta Hawks. He was also an assistant for the Dallas Mavericks during their 2011 championship season.

Stotts most recently joined the Bucks again as a lead assistant before abruptly stepping down prior to the start of the 2023-24 season after reportedly clashing with former Bucks head coach Adrian Griffin (h/t The Athletic’s Shams Charania and Eric Nehm.)

This will not be Stotts’ first time behind the Warriors’ bench. He previously served as an assistant for Mike Montgomery during the Warriors’ 2004-05 season.

Stotts will come into the role with experience coaching more than 1,003 NBA games. He holds a 517-486 regular-season record and a 23-44 mark in the postseason.

He will now take over for former lead assistant Kenny Atkinson, whose role in helping the Warriors to the 2022 title helped him earn a five-year deal as head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Stackhouse joins the sideline with experience coaching 162 college games. He led Vanderbilt to a 70-92 record over the stretch, including a 9-23 mark last season.

The additions of Stotts and Stackhouse continues a busy offseason for the Warriors.

After parting ways with veterans Klay Thompson and Chris Paul, the Warriors have added guard De’Anthony Melton and forward Kyle Anderson as they look to build another title contender around Steph Curry and Draymond Green.
