New voters embrace democracy as IPAS residents and Ukrainians meet Wexford election candidates

Many of Wexford’s Ukrainian residents will vote in the local elections on June 7.

While immigration remains one of the key issues for voters in the upcoming elections, it should be noted that many of those voters are themselves immigrants. In the Rosslare District it’s estimated that upwards of 300 people will cast their votes for the first time in the local elections on June 7, many of them residents in the International Protection Accommodation Services (IPAS) centre and hotels in the area.

Some of those people were in attendance at an event hosted by Wexford Local Development (WLD) in Kilrane Community Centre last week which sought to give voice to those who don’t always have their opinions heard. Joined by representatives from the Rosslare Women’s Shed, the Ballymitty Shed, the Portside Residents Association, the Rosslare Harbour Maritime Centre, the Rosslare Harbour Kilrane Men’s Shed, the Save Our Nursing Home campaign, and the Yola Hedge School, these first-time voters had the opportunity to meet with four of those running for council on June 7.
