Newburgh’s Josh Yan two strokes off state boys golf tourney lead after first round

Newburgh Free Academy sophomore Josh Yan sits in second place after the first round of the New York State championships at the Mark Twain Golf Course in Elmira.

Yan carded a 2-under-par 70. He trails Joseph Dolezal of The Wheatley School (Section 8, Nassau County) by two strokes headed into Monday’s final round.

The next-best start by a Section 9 golfer is Loyal Goodermote of New Paltz at 4-over-par 76.

As a team, Section 9 is tied for eighth place at 41-over-par 545 – the leaders are Section Eight (Nassau) at 17-over 521 and Section Six (Buffalo) at 20-over 524.
