Novak Djokovic storms out of BBC interview after snapping at reporter over question

Novak Djokovic stormed out of a BBC interview after being unhappy with the question.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion is through to the men’s singles quarter finals after a straight set victory over Holger Rune on Monday.

Djokovic won fairly comfortably but he was not happy with sections of the crowd on Centre Court.

The 37-year-old accused fans chanting ‘”Ruuuuuuune” in support of his opponent of making it “an excuse to boo” when asked by interviewer Rishi Persad following his victory.

The calls took place when Rune won a point at the expense of Djokovic.

In a chat with the BBC, Wimbledon’s broadcasting partner, Djokovic was asked how he reflects following comments about finding some members of the crowd disrespectful.

He simply replied, “Same”. The interviewer then asked him whether he feels he gets the respect he deserves from the fans.

“Look, as I said in the post-match interview, I thanked all of the people,” Djokovic commented.

“Most of the people in the stadium tonight were respectful and I thank them and I know that, after watching tennis all day, it’s not easy to stay.

“So, I was thankful. I don’t take it for granted. Obviously, they’re a big part of why I still play, the crowds and the people who really appreciate the tennis players and what we do and the efforts we put in.

“We appreciate them paying for tickets and coming to support us and support tennis, to support this beautiful tournament. So I always try to acknowledge that. “But when I feel the crowd is stepping over the line then I react. I don’t regret my words or actions on the court.”

But the third question about the crowd, quizzing Djokovic on his mindset when the crowd are disrespecting, was not received well and the seven-time Wimbledon champ had enough.

He fired back: “Do you have any other questions other than the crowd? I mean, are you focused only on that or do you have any questions about the match or something like that, or is it solely focused on that?”.

The reporter tried to explain the question was valid but Djokovic responding by saying: “Well, I mean, this is the third question already. I said what I had to say.”

There was then a question about his upcoming match with Alex de Minaur but Djokovic only offered a brief sentence, adding: |Yeah, I look forward to it. It’s going to be a tough one. Thanks.”

He proceeded to leave his seat and exit the interview. Djokovic will be back on Centre Court on Wednesday at 14:45.
